Listening – The first of four basic learning skills, involving the ability to identify sounds of speech then processing those sounds into meaningful words and sentences. Listening is a receptive skill.
Learning phonetically enables learners to:
- ‘recognise the sounds that each individual letter makes;
- identify the sounds that different combinations of letters make – such as ‘sh’ or ‘oo’ and
- blend these sounds together from left to right to make a word.’
